"keys, cellphone, wallet." as my roommate, bethany, used to say, "as long as you have these three things, you'll survive."
you throw everything into your bag, jump in your car and can sort out what you need later, fishing around in your car, adding things or tossing things out.
it doesn't matter what shoes you wear, because you can drive barefoot and you rarely have to walk to further than the car to the front door.
you can't read while you're driving, though.

here, going out takes a lot of forethought. at least for me. "be prepared", the boy scouts could train here. you need at least keys, cellphone, wallet, travelcard/oyster card and decent shoes. a backpack or an across-the-shoulders bag becomes pretty crucial because a short-strapped purse is harder to handle over long distances.
anything you want to have with you for the day you have to have on your person. books, water, it can all get a little heavy.
but you can read on public transport.
I like this post! It kind of reminds me of one a long while back that you posted about your excessive backpack packing habits! :) And since visiting new york I've have always fancied the idea of being a on-the-move-reader, glad you're enjoying yourself and the lovely spring colors!
